Airplane Models from my Youth

Postby Featherless_Biped » Tue Apr 28, 2015 1:57 pm

I no longer build models of airplanes, but Steve W. (stewil) encouraged me to post these pictures of some partly built models that I had started to build when I was a kid. I found them stashed in my garage and decided to finish the build.

It's a display of U.S. Air Force planes – all the same scale – that were probably in the air in the '50s. They are small scale and not particularly well detailed, but there was a certain satisfaction in completing a project that had been half finished for so many years.

KC-135 Stratotanker
B-47E Strato-Jet
B-52E Stratofortress
F-84 Thunderstreak

F-89 Scorpion
F-102 Dagger
F-86 Sabre
B-58 Hustler
B-66B Destroyer
F-94C Starfire
C-130A Hercules

I also found this completed wall-mount display stored in my garage. I made it at about the same time I started the above model. It's about the same scale and includes some Navy planes.

Both really nice. They may not be that detailed, but they certainly have their charms!

Nice RT. I actually have a slight preference for older, less detailed, retro models. There's something a bit "naive art" about them that I like a lot. I think it's the way they reduce a model down to its essential shape...

I think this is very cool. I am old enough to remember things like this and it makes me pine for the simpler days of the past.
Great that you still had it and thanks for showing it.

RT,
Am so glad you posted these pics of your "airforce".
I especially enjoyed seeing the third picture of all the aircraft ballooning outward into the wild blue yonder.
Well Done. :D
Cheers and Happy Collecting,
Steve

I agree with Steve, very impressive.
The box art reminds me of those military sets advertised on the back of comics in the 50/60s.
Cheers,
David
