Look at the difference between Hotwheels and Elite. It could happen.

In a sense, its an upraised middle finger to the diecast community by Ferrari. They do not care about the product representing their brand, only the size of the check.
Continental Cars the NZ agent for Ferrari used to give every purchaser of a new Ferrari a model of the car they had just bought. Can see why they don't any more.
