11th June 1955 - Mercedes 300 SLR Team Diorama

Post by Jager » Fri Sep 09, 2016 7:58 am

Another group shot, this time of the works Mercedes team from the 1955 Le Mans 24 Hours.

The team would withdraw from the race after Pierre Levegh's tragic accident.

Nicely done Ian. The transporters really stand out for me.

Excellent. Looks very good indeed

British roads have history. Some were built by the Romans. British road investment being what it is, they have only been re-surfaced a few times since.

Thanks guys. Here's a period shot of the Mercedes race team enroute to a race in 1955 : the "Blue Wonder" transporter, two O3500 vans (one was a transporter and one was a mobile workshop) accompanied by two L3500 trucks.

Image

I figured I should try a B & W shot as well to keep in period.

They were very moden in their need for lots of stuff at the race track.
Just for a comparison here is a late 50's Indy car team, and this is one of the top teams in the sport.

That's superb! The 3 Mercedes transporters and the 3 racing cars are a brilliant group! And how about the figures? Where did you get them?

Thanks again guys. It was nice to see the contract with the Indy team....great picture Jeff.

Bruno, the driver figures are from "Q-Models" in Japan : http://www.q-model.jp/Streamline-E.htm

They're not super expensive, but finding them is tricky. The other figures (mechanic and team leader) are from TSM pit crew sets.

Great diorama Ian! The tent is DIY or it is some canvas of a truck?

Thanks Paulius. The tent is from a 1:35 Tamiya kit.

Thanks Danny. I have the Porsche version, which is real, but I think the Mercedes version is fictional.

In fact I intend to make a small diorama in a similar form to the above using the Porsche version.

Excellent work Ian. I like your addition of the tent and storage creates. Different scale but not so it matters.

How many years has it taken to collect all the vehicles etc to make this? I feel we are coming to a stage now due to the variety and number of models issued that dioramas like yours are more likely to evolve. Personally I think it is the way to go for collecting. It adds so much more fun to the hobby and delight for those who wish to view are creations.

Thanks Paul. It's taken around 8-10 years of collecting to put this diorama together. The #21 Mercedes and Blue Wonder transporter were issued a long time ago by Minichamps and CMC respectively, but it's only in the last 18 months that Minichamps got around to issuing the #19 car and Neo did the large O3500 van.

There are plenty more to follow :D .

Holy mercaptans Ian, I honestly don't know which I liked best, this one or your Porsche one! Image
Though if I had to choose, I think I would prefer this one just because it represents what IMO was the most dramatic race in the history of LM. Fantastic job, absolutely stunning!
