A New Le Mans Diorama Takes Shape

Post by Jager » Wed May 17, 2017 7:35 am

This weekend, the West Australian Model Collectors Club will hold its annual open day. Some of you may have seen my Bathurst diorama from a previous WAMCC open day several years ago and my first thought was to recycle my old diorama. However, after a last minute rethink, I decided earlier this week to build a new Le Mans paddock diorama.

Even though the WAMCC open day is this weekend, work on the diorama only started this afternoon. Starting with a 2.1metre long internal door as a base, the basic structure was starting to take shape after a couple of hours of work. Here's a quick preview of today's progress.

Painting should start tomorrow and more details will follow in the coming days.

Okay who has done the maths :?

If that door is 2.1 mtrs long what is that in the world of 1:43rd scale :?: Say 1 meter (in 1:43) is equal to 23mm (1:1)

I make it approximately 91 meters long in 1:43rd

I'm all eyes and ears with this one Ian.

Wouldn't it be easer to multiply 2.1 x 43 ? Which is 90.3 8-)

90m - 91m.....yes, its something like that :D .

The diorama will consist of approx 50 cars, which I started to arrange this morning in preparation for their move to the open day on Saturday morning. I'm still sweating on the arrival of two more cars which were ordered several weeks ago to complete the line up.

As requested, time for a quick update of the progress made this afternoon.

I started by applying some plaster to the base to make the surface a little more uneven so that it would looks more realistic (I read once the biggest weakness with most diorama's is that they are made on a perfectly flat base, but in real life nothing is perfectly flat).

Image

Once the plaster had dried and some of the excess was sanded off, it was time to start the painting to replicate the sandy paddock seen at Le Mans in 1965 (some of you may have worked out from the models above that the diorama was centred around 1965) :

Image

I used a textured render paint applied with a stippling method. While the paint was still wet, I ran a cheap model through the paint on the roadways to create wheel tracks for added realism. The paint looks a little glossy in the picture below, but that's only because it was still wet when I took the picture and it will dry with a matte finish :

Image

Tomorrow I plan to repaint everything with a second coat, add some fake grass and finish the fence at the back.

Guys, apologies for the lack of progress pictures but I was under the pump to get the diorama completed for display today.

As expected, there are lots of things I would improve on with more time. In particular, the fake grass didn't set the way I would have liked, but I'm satisfied enough with the final results.

Unfortunately my display backs onto a large glass window, so the pictures have bit of glare and I'll try and get some better photos tomorrow.

The overview from the Eastern end :

Image

.....and the Western end :

Image

Here's the Porsche team. I used some artistic license for the #34 car as its actually the Vitesse car from 1964. The #34 Porsche in 1965 practised, but failed to start the race and as such hasn't been modelled :

Image

The Ferrari team. Considering there were 12 Ferrari's entered, I would like to have had a few more to display :

Image

The Scuderia Filipinetti team :

Image

The Cobra team. It would have been nice to also have the #10 car from TSM to display, but that will have to wait for another time :
Image

Finally, the Triumph team, next to the Dunlop service team :

Caravan is a nice touch, and very much of the period.

Rome (or Le Mans) was not built in a day. Evidently it takes just under a week. ;)

Cannot say anything more than all the other guys have already done before... Simply stunning :o ! And as I know absolutely nothing about racing cars and history, I'd never notice that any certain cars were missing... :) Your diorama looks very vivid and the size is really impressive! Well, then relax and enjoy your work for the remaining weekend, and of course I'd love to see some further pics and details. Congratulations! :P

Congratulations Ian that is a fantastic display. The cars are great but it is the other additions that really make it - I particularly like the tent and tyre depot, oh and the blue Cortina. I am guessing a few of these items were rediscovered when you were unpacking recently.

Thanks everyone. This is an idea I've had in my head for 5 or 6 years, so it was satisfying to see it come together and I received lots of positive comments today, even from collectors with little or no interest in sportscars. Typically, it was the transporters rather than the cars which attracted most people.

Its now all packed away, though I may have an opportunity to display it again in a few months. If that opportunity eventuates, I may upgrade it with some of the other ideas I have in my head, maybe even using the cars and trucks from a different year. If that happens, I'll be sure to come back and post more pictures.
