I was so tempted to buy a 1:1 of these when they first arrived in the UK but apart from being a bit exotic at the time and nearest VW dealership being 10 miles away from home put me off the idea and I bought a Ford Capri instead. Dealer on the doorstep. Looks really good as a 1:43. Nice add David.

I'm not a fan of (non-racing) Lotus in general, but that looks REALLY smart.

Such luxury! Two tone. Apologies to the 'youngsters' on here but David will understand, this takes me back to the early 1950s when petrol was still rationed, only professional people like doctors could afford and run something like this post WWII. Into the garage every 500 miles for a decoke, new plugs and points. Our family's 1937 Morris 10 Four Series II was second hand and bought in 1956 just after Suez. It seemed to spend a lot of time in the garage being fettled.

I bought the Lansdowne white metal1936 Morris 10 in black - as luck would have it - for purely nostalgic reasons. It's the only pre war car in my collection.

Our local garage and petrol station (selling National Benzole, Shell, BP, Dominion, and Esso) did a lot of maintenance on pre war cars like the Austins and Morris in the town.

Life only started taking on a more modern feel from the Fords (Consuls/Zephyrs) of 1954/5. The local garage became Ford and Morris agents. In different but long term ownership the business survives on the same but vastly modernised site and is still a Ford Retail Dealer to this day.

Were those the days? - in some ways yes, as the place was on my way to school and occasionally I would accompany my dad when he went to drop off or pick up the Morris. I'd see the mechanics at work and oily bits scattered around the place. Be able to see cars up on the ramp or with engines and gearboxes out and wheels off. Later on I bought modern cars from them and of course knew the people in the business from pump attendant to the bosses who my dad had been at school with.
