If I'm not mistaken the 928 was a transaxle design as well. It wasn't raced much, but this one is from Le Mans in 1983 :

That is not a 924 GTS !
The actual car used in the Monte Carlo rally was a 924 Turbo , even though it was "signed in" as a GTS .

A GTS would be a wide body. This is a narrow body car with wheelarch extensions.
It doesn't even have the Turbo's intake louvres in the nose, nor the NACA duct in the bonnet.

GTS would also have non pop up headlights with plexiglass covers , rear boot spoiler and a large bonnet intake .

The Spark model is correct in not having the NACA duct and nose vents , as it was Intended to be a 924 Turbo model, but it was not homologated until a week later in February 1979. The car was fitted with a Turbo engine later , ready for the Safari , which was the first event for the turbo engined car

Heres the same 924 Turbo as it was used a short time later by Jurgen Barth on the Safari rally . You can see the nose intakes ad the NACA duct clearly on here

So what's the conclusion ? The car is described as per the official entry list/results for the '79 Monte Carlo rally :

As I said , the model is correct but the name is the confusing part.

From the research Ive done on the car , it was listed as a "Porsche 924 Turbo hybrid" with a disc brake rear axle and modified chassis .
It was to be a 924 Turbo , but the rally took place on January 26th and the 924 Turbo`s homologation wasnt done until the beginning of February , approx 1 week after the rally.
The car was then converted to Turbo spec after it was homologated and its first race as a 924 Turbo was in the Safari rally in April 1979. It was on the Safari rally entry list as a 924 Turbo and its the same car as used on the Monte.
The crew entered the car as a 924 GTS , which is why it shows as it does in the official entry list , but that is the strange part as it clearly isnt a Carrera GTS .

Perhaps all those vents were added to the production Turbo as a result of experience gained from this rally. Engine bay heat buildup is quite significant on the NA cars already, never mind with a red hot turbo spinning away.
