The fourth round of the 1973 ETCC was held at the Nurburgring and was a 6 hour race. It consisted of 2 divisions based on engine size, with Group 2 being for cars of 2.5 litres and above which for this race was eight BMW 3.0 CSls and seven Ford Capris. Also prior to the race BMW had homologated a new aerodynamic package (we call it the batmobile) and a new crankshaft enabling a 3.5 litre engine to be run.
BMW Motosport however with it's two car entry relied on the tried and trusted 3.3 litre engine for it's cars, one driven by Toine Hezemans, Dieter Quester, & Harald Menzel who qulaified 6th and the other driven by Hans-Joachim Stuck & Chris Amon who qualified 2nd behind the 3.5 litre Alpina CSL of Hans-Peter Joisten and Niki Lauda.
As is usual with the Nurburgring and particularly so in the 1970s this was a race of attrition with only 34 finishers out of 76 starters and in the top division only 5 out of 15 finished, 2 Capris in 5th and 10th and 3 CSLs who took the top 3 slots with Stuck and Amon taking the win by a margin of a lap
