Car 54 where are you?

Post by Alex_W » Mon Feb 10, 2020 7:25 pm

No, I'm not talking about Toody and Muldoon...

I'm talking about Oscar Koveleski. Autoworld, and the #54 McLaren.

I'll probably do the SCCA low-wing version.

This car is now available from Marsh Models (good stuff) but I thought I'd try my own version based on the GMP diecast.

The decals are on their way and the disassembly is done.

So far, so good.

Is this a 1/43 model? And did this car really exist? Sorry for my questions, you know I've got no idea of those racing cars... For me the car looks like some Matchbox fantasy cars, but of course I'm sure you're going to convert this into a dream car, will you? Looking forward ;)

It is 1/43 and it is a real car. It was driven in the Canadian-American Challenge Cup (Can-Am) by Oscar Koveleski. Oscar was a privateer and was the owner of Autoworld. Autoworld was a supplier of models, slot cars and automotive goodies whose catalog was eagerly awaited by "car nuts" of all ages.

The cars racing stripe is a slot car track. I had a replica of the car by Aurora as an HO slot car when I was a kid.

I've always wanted to build one in 1/43.

Not too many mods required on this one. The rear wing was set too high and had horizontal supports that were not on the Autoworld car. This was a quick fix that involved shortening the uprights and removing the supports, then filing away the support mounts from the roll bar and uprights.

The casting is pretty good so there will be a minimal amount of sanding and then the primer goes on.

There's a rumble in the Bronx, Brooklyns broken out in fights.

Always an Oscar fan and I have nothing but happy memories of spending hours with my nose in the AW catalog.

The decals arrived today. They are from Patto's Place and they're very sharp.
