Jaguar 24 Hour Montlhery Record JWK 651

Post by Stewart Frazer »

I’m going to build this iconic XK 120 to add to my Stirling Moss collection.

First get the SMTS kit

Next buy this book.

Then sort out the paint, Old English White.
There are umpteen versions of that and who knows which one is correct.
My choice: -

Now sort out the configuration of the car on the day.

The top photo (from the book) is a bit suspect, the helmet looks to be from a later era.
The bottom one purports to portray a pit stop/driver change! Don’t think so. More likely preparatory activities. No BRDC logo?

Looks more like it, and in fact that’s the configuration that the book’s author favours.
Makes sense; windscreen and number plate removed, tonneau cover fitted, spats and hub caps removed for tyre changes.
Comments welcomed. CDM might have some insight.
What colour wheels?

Cool subject!

Wheels look to be lighter than black. I'd say grey or burgundy.

Hi Stewart

As you invited comments...!

Whilst my comment isn't at all helpful, practical or beneficial, I'm moved to comment that it's wonderful to see a SMTS kit being constructed. I think they're fantastic!

I also note that you will be employing a Halfords spray - paint. I find that particularly interesting (coincidental?) because the chap who I commission to build SMTS kits on my behalf counter-instructs me to scurry to my nearest Halfords to select and buy the closest paint shade to my particular requirements (except in one instance when we commissioned a paint manufacturer for an exact match of 'California Sage').

Please do share your kit - building progress!

Good choice, Stewart! Of course, I prefer the civilian version, as on the showroom floor. These white metal kits are great fun but can really give a workout. Keep us posted, and good luck. David H

Stewart

Just spotted your request.

I cant really help you with the Jaguar build.

I would guess that the static photos might not have been taken in the middle of a record attempt. More likely to have been taken afterwards.

Even in the photos you have shared there are differences.

Good luck with the build

Chris

Hi Stewart,

Just caught up with this thread. Did you get your questions answered? I think there were multiple cars being run at various record attempts. I will be back where my Jaguar library is tomorrow. I can look anything up then.

Your choice of OE White looks good. Jaguar did not introduce OE White until 1952, before that it was Cream which had more yellow. The subject car would have been Cream, but the paint you have selected matches that color well. Confusing I know, but its not concours. For that we have color chips. :D

Let me know if I can help.
