New(ish) member from West Oz.

Post by JohnL » Mon Jun 18, 2018 11:58 pm

Well, Ian recommended I introduce myself, so, here goes. An expat Kiwi living in the country outside Perth, W.A. Grew up and lived mainly on the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand. Used to do kitsets - aircraft mainly (I had my pilot's license at 18), from a very young age up until marriage no.1 ended. By that stage was into 1/20 & 1/24 cars - F1 and sports cars and Protar bikes, as well as SN 3 1/2 scale NZ railways! Boxes full of detail accessories, airbrushes, boxes of reference books - it was all a bit much anyway! That all fell by the wayside, and I walked away and re-immersed myself in Motorbikes (real). I always liked models, however, and when I saw a 1/43 GMP McLaren M8 in a local store, I thought...."Hmm - a good size, and I don't have to assemble, detail & paint this - just enjoy it, and, my eyesight isn't what it was, so ... the rot was seeded!
Moved to Australia about 12 yrs ago, settled in to where I am now, and started to browse E bay....fatal! After "experimenting" with what interested me, I discovered Spark models, which lead to finding John Bennoch online, and my bank balance was gone!
Grew up in the heady days of the Tasman Formula, so single seaters of that era have a particular fascination - mainly British - Lotus, Lola, Brabham, McLaren, Cooper, BRM. Most marques that have fallen by the wayside, so I can peg an end date! CanAm was an early favourite, so they are on the list! Drivers - any Kiwi in F1- Hulme, McLaren, Amon, Ganley and Graham Hill. (Have met and talked to them all, as a brash racing mad youth) Other driver themes as well if they stray outside the car themes... Watson, Patrese, and Johnny Herbert for some strange reason. Recently I've started to develop an interest in 50's Le Mans cars....
Living in Oz, I picked up (read - bought by mistake on E bay because I couldn't resist bidding) a couple of Biante models of Bathurst Monaros, and was quite impressed. So, selected saloons joined "the list", ending in trying to collect at least one example of every model of Australian Ford, Holden and Chrysler, late 50's to current (and end) - preferably a racing version, so that means a lot of Bathurst cars. Trax model most of the local saloons (not very well in many cases),and Classic Carlectables, Ace Models and a couple of others do as well. Armco, who have now ceased production, did a series of Australian Saloon and Sports Sedan racers of "my era", which also helped ignite the saloon collection, especially those with a NZ connection. (I didn't miss a race meeting at Pukekohe from 1964-1970, so the wild and wonderful saloon cars of the era are a favourite. One day, if I ever retire, I'll attempt to convert a few Anglias, A40's, Zephyrs, Morris Minors etc, to the beasts of my youth...)
I really need to slow down the acquisition rate - I'm still finishing the rooms in the top of the barn so there's nowhere to display anything atm! It's no fun looking at 4 large boxes......

Thanks for the introduction to your rather varied collecting habits John

Welcome to the forum

British roads have history. Some were built by the Romans. British road investment being what it is, they have only been re-surfaced a few times since.

Welcome to the asylum, John! Image
However, be warned that this place is evil. Very evil. It makes you buy things and spend money.

You know why Italians speak with their hands? Because they have to work a lot on their engines.

Just tallied up - 86! All 43rd
Spark - 28
Trax - 20
Biante - 12
Minichamp - 8
Classic Carlectables - 6
Paradise Garage - 3
Armco - 2
TSM/Ebbro/Looksmart/Ace/Apex/Oxford/Vanguard - 1 each

No wonder I'm so bloody broke!
I'd say he's doing just fine even without my influence  .

John, thanks for taking the time to share a bit more of your interests with us. Bathurst, Classic F1 & 50's Le Mans sounds like a pretty good starting point.

Even a Sud Ti would be good - Owen Evans got 132mph (214kph) on the Auckland Southern Motorway (NZ) in his one night....OK - it had a little bit of work on it, but....
