Festival of Fine Fins

Post by Ozmac » Fri Mar 20, 2015 9:12 pm

It was while looking at Tom's photo of a Fiat 1500 with very tasteful 1960s' fins that I thought of this little theme for "themed photos". Fins. Some are small, some outrageously large, others modest and neat. And so, collectors, how about a Festival of Fine Fins, one of automotive styling's great contributions during the 50s and 60s in particular.

God, what a crappy model this is. Hadn't realised how badly finished it is! Painted-over bling, a travesty, but at least these sharp little Cadillac fins look sharp.

Can you guess this one?

Too modest, too tasteful so far? Try these sharp edges ...

Wham! Kapow!

And last but definitely not the least, the Borgward "Traumwagen" or "Dream Car".

That black thing looks like the ZIL 111A limousine. The '50's were the "fins" decade and nobody made them better and bigger than Caddy, Chevy and Chrysler. I like the rear end on that '55 Chevy.

Some major omissions first time round, so to set the record straight...

Image
How could I forget the D-Type, the first "favourite car" of my car-loving boyhood!

Image
And how could I forget the mighty Tatra 77!

As for the rest, they're modest little European fin-ettes at best...

Did you know that Japanese cars of the late 50s early 60s also had fins?

This thread is filling up with lots of cool cars! :)

But, what's making this thread really interesting is to see what many of you consider to be "fins"!

I was trying to show that for lots of manufacturers, the real fins slowly changed into taillight housings with slightly extended rear wings.

The Buick Electra 225 is my favourite for canted fins and the '59 Caddy for verticals with it's excessive ornamentation of twinned bullet lights! '60 Chrysler 300 Series runs a close 3rd. '58-'62 was the most fantastic period of unfettered and expressive US car design ever.

Here in the UK the Vauxhall Cresta PA (complete with two tone paint jobs) and Ford Zephyr MkIII were on offer to compete with BMCs Pininfarina penned and two toned family saloons of '59-'60.
