19th June, 1965 - Porsche 904 Team Diorama

Post by Jager » Sat Aug 20, 2016 4:04 am

The works Porsche team wait nervously for the start of the 1965 Le Mans 24 Hours.

Their team of four 904's - an 8-cylinder 904/8 (#33), two 6-cylinder 904/6's (#32 and #35) and a 4-cylinder 904/4 (#36) had qualified in 18th, 22nd, 27th and 34th positions respectively.

They would go on to take 4th and 5th place in the race and win the 2000cc Class.

British roads have history. Some were built by the Romans. British road investment being what it is, they have only been re-surfaced a few times since.

Fantastic piece of work Ian. The mechanics bring it to life for me.

Hum, I never notice the resemblance between the Porsche 904 and the Opel GT until now.

Thanks for all the positive comments guys. I have several other group shots planned using this setup, so will try to post some more pictures next weekend.

I was up in the Welsh mountains playing on my mountain bike over the weekend so just catching up on this excellent piece of work Ian. This diorama lark means a lot of work at times but the effect is so rewarding. Just brings the models into character with their history don't you think.

Looking forward in anticipation to other snippets of sports car history frozen in time. A pleasure to view.

Any period photos of your inspiration?

Looking fantastic, like all your dioramas!

Thanks Tom. There is nothing specific that relates to this diorama......its just how I imagined it based on a combination of various period photos from Le Mans and pictures I've seen of the Porsche transporter I've seen at other events like the Targa Florio :

Just to give this thread a second life, I've added some additional Porsche items from the 1960's, so thought it worth updating. The newest arrivals are the VW T1 flatbed which was on sale at CK Modelcars and Schuco's Opel Blitz transporter which arrived last week with a bit of assistance from Andy. The transporter is a lovely piece (limited to 500 pieces, whereas the MAN transporter was 2,000 pieces), and the VW T1 is the perfect size to hold the engine cover from a Porsche 904 (taken from an older Vitesse model). As a set, they look stunning together.

Unfortunately I've misplaced the box with my mechanics figures, spare wheels, tools etc, so for the moment it looks a bit bare. I'll keep searching for the missing items and look to re-shoot it when I find them.

Here's the two transporters side by side preparing to leave the Porsche works for the Targa Florio in 1965, a month before Le Mans :
