So whats the best glue to use .....

Post by Galaxy Gaz » Thu May 09, 2019 11:08 am

For building some of these ?

I have bought a couple of single axle trailers and a couple of twin axles to use with my service vans.
Not having built a metal kit of any kind , I was wondering if theres a particular glue you should use or if regular super glue would suffice. :?

Cyanoacrilate is the first thing that comes to mind. Or rather, that's what I would use if I didn't get another opinion :D

You know why Italians speak with their hands? Because they have to work a lot on their engines.

I agree. There are several types that vary in set time and thickness. I use Zap-A-Gap CA+ most of the time because it is a bit thicker than regular super glue and therefore easier to control.

I am not a fan of superglue for white metal. I much prefer a 2K epoxy.

Are all those little peaces metal? Wondering if they could be soldered in place instead of gluing?

Soldering: Of course a very elegant method to join metal parts. There's no risk of melting the existing parts if you either are able to make very neat soldering points (warning: only for professionals!), or if you use low-temperature solder. I use soldering wire for 145 °C (293 °F). This way it's quite easy and without any risk :P

Glueing: For pieces which do not need to be burdened that much I prefer glueing, it's easier to handle in my opinion. I agree with Tom and use solely 2K glue from UHU, types "sofortfest" and "schnellfest". They set in 5 resp. 20 minutes, are crystal clear, and after 24 h they are hard like glass, can be sanded, drilled, painted etc. With a little training you can play with the different states of setting, depending if you want to have the glue liquid or rather stiff. This way you can also use it as a kind of putty, to recreate headlights or other parts.

I use epoxy sometimes as well. I'll have to try the UHU.
