Making better aerials

Post by LUW » Tue May 01, 2018 5:41 pm

I think most people think that guitar strings are ideal to make good aerials, but I never used that technique. What I used back in my 1:18 days was acupuncture needles, and they always worked fine for me, and can also be used for 1:43rds. My recent Le Mans winning Mac had a bad aerial, that was a tad too thick and worse, was crooked. So I thought of making it look better using a needle.

Acupuncture needles come in different sizes and thickness, from hair thin to about 0.5 mm ø. And best of all, they come with a handle that is perfect as the base for the aerial.

You will need a pair of tweezers, a good cutting pliers and obviously glue.

So I cut a section of the shaft of the needle and a small piece of the handle, and than it was just a matter of removing the ugly plastic one and stabbing the new one in the hole on the roof, with an itsy-bitsy drop of glue.

A 5 minute job and now it looks much closer to the real thing.

I'm sure you will agree that that looks MUCH better than how it looked before.

You know why Italians speak with their hands? Because they have to work a lot on their engines.

Stupid easy, in fact. I think the hardest part is to find the needles, but they're usually available in medical supply stores. And a couple are good enough for quite a few cars.
Just be careful with the pointy end :D

That's a great tip Luc.

I thought the needles might be difficult to find, but there are 2,000 on eBay.

The shaft was from the big one, that is 0.25×75 mm, and for the base I used the small one, that unfortunately I can't understand what's written on the package (Chinese ) - but I think it's something around 0.15×25 mm. In my eyes the small one would look too thin as a "main" aerial but would be perfect for those smaller secondary ones on more modern cars.

Hmmmm looks good Luc.

But for me im staying away from them, as I girl I sort of met was all about pressure points and them silly needles, she stuck a bunch into my back. Well I fell asleep and rolled over, yep ouch to say the least. (Yes more to that story but this is a car forum so, nup)

Good write up and details buddy.
Have to say tho it would do great for the General Lee from the Duke of Hazard.

Cheers.

 WARNING: Only to be used with parental guidance!

The General would benefit a LOT from a needle.
