Minichamps Le Mans 1999 Team Oreca Chrysler Viper #53

Post by jna » Mon Feb 11, 2019 4:55 am

During a period of inclement weather I decided to spend time reviewing my collection to see if I had missed releases over the years. Happily, all is complete bar one model, as per the title to this thread.

One excellent online database shows what I assume is a copy of Minichamps’ advertising picture of the model with a reference number 430991453. That number makes sense.

Having searched the web as carefully as I can I’m unable to find any other reference to it.

The retailers I used to meet at model fairs etc. (before online buying became almost the only way of acquiring models) kept me well informed of what was to be released. I used to be a collector of any factory built Le Mans model so it was in their interests to keep me up to date. There were of course far fewer releases back then.

Have I missed something? Does anybody actually possess this model or is aware of its release?

Thank you.

Well, I have the 1999 #51 that is labeled 430991451, and also the #55 (430991455). So I think you can assume that #53 is indeed 430991453. But I just googled "minichamps 430991453" and nothing showed up.

John, my personal database indicates the #53 was never made by Minichamps, but I can't be 100% certain. However,I noticed the 1998 and 1999 cars are almost identical....the main difference I can see is the addition of 'Chrysler' lettering under the headlights (in addition to the '99 cars running the newer style of wheels). I wonder how easy it would be to convert a '98 #53 car to a '99 #53 car (though maybe it would be easier to convert a '99 #51 car to a '99 #53 car ?).

Luc, thank you for taking the time to carry out a search. Yes, #53 would have had the number as mentioned. Minichamps had back then, and maybe still do have, what I thought was an excellent system so that you could recognise the race year and car number from just looking at the reference number. As you know, in Spark's very early days they tried a prefix system that I believe generally confused more than guided.

Thank you for checking Ian. I'm sure your are correct and I wonder if the picture of the model was taken from the Minichamps catalogue, perhaps the 2000 edition. Unusual though for the company back then not to go ahead and release the model. The cars from the two years you refer to are very similar indeed but the task of carrying out a conversion for someone who needs his retailer to put even the smallest tobacco decal on a model is too great.

Anyway, the matter is resolved.
