Hobby Horse Watson Roadster Conversions

Post by Alex_W » Fri Apr 05, 2019 10:33 am

Hobby Horse 1/43 Watson Roadsters are excellent candidates for conversion. Disassembly takes some care and patience, but there is a nice selection of graphics available for these cars. And, the 500 being what it is, there are plenty of reference photos.

I've done eight so far and have two more in the works.

1959 Leader Card Indy 500 Winner driven by Rodger Ward

1961 Bryant Special driven by Len Sutton

1961 Dean Van Lines Indy 500 Pole driven by Eddie Sachs

1961 Konstant Hot Special Driven by Al Keller

1963 Konstant Hot Special driven by Roger McCluskey

Image

1961 Simoniz Special driven by defending Indy 500 winner Jim Rathmann
Image

1962 Willard Battery Special driven by Parnelli Jones

1958 John Zink Special driven by Jimmy Reese

More details about the modifications involved in these conversions is available on the Watson Roadster page of my blog.

You know why Italians speak with their hands? Because they have to work a lot on their engines.

Magnificent, stunning, great :P ! Your cars have a really unique look, they're looking simply proper! You know, my subject is all the classic coupés and convertibles, but especially your 50s & 60s racing cars immediately have my full sympathy. Perhaps you have some pictures of the process of building them (I haven't found anything on your blog), if so, please post them.

Thank you for the kind words.

I've only recently posted the disassembly process on my blog:

https://43mods.blogspot.com/p/hobby-hor ... embly.html

There is also more general information on the conversions here (you may have already seen this):

https://43mods.blogspot.com/p/watson-roadsters.html

Since joining the forum I've been inspired to create a diorama to better showcase the cars. I've posted some photos here:

viewtopic.php?f=42&t=12520

I have three more roadsters under construction. I'll post documentation of the process on my blog as they progress.

Not sure how I missed this but I am very happy to have found it now.

How I wish C1 would have held on long enough to produce the Konstant Hot Roadster. But you did the next best thing, you made your own and you made it look great!

In 1958 Ed Elisian qualified this car in the middle of the front row. Elisian had a reputation for being erratic in both his personal life and in his driving, and some drivers expressed concern about his abilities prior to the start of the race. As it turned out they were right to be concerned. In turn three of the first lap Elisian charged inside pole sitter Dick Rathmann and lost control of his car, taking out Rathmann and triggering a 15-car pileup that resulted in the death of driver Pat O'Connor.

Wow, that's tragic. Fab model though, would love that in my collection even though it would make up a category on its own.

Thanks. I really like the Gulf Aston Martin diorama you posted.

The start in '58 was a hell of a mess. Dick Rathmann took the lead had has a solid line going into turn three when Elisian charged down inside him and spun, taking Rathman out. Jimmy Reese braked and was in position to clear the accident but he was hit from behind by Pat O'Connor. In the melee that ensued Jerry Unser was launched over the wall.

This is the latest effort. It's the 1963 Kaiser Aluminum Special the Rodger Ward drove to a fourth place finish in the Indy 500. The scoops on the engine cover were carved from pine sticks. I took some photos of the process and I'll be posting them to my blog in a day or two.

This morning I added the rivet detail.

Thanks for the kind comments.

I've documented the process I used for making the scoops on this car (and the 1963 Konstant Hot Special) on my blog:
