Nissan Skyline GT-R 1993 IMSA GT Fuji Winner - Ebbro 44503 vs HPI 8417

Post by dbonser » Sun Jan 29, 2017 12:01 pm

Ebbro 44503 is on the left and HPI 8417 is on the right. Both are resin models. Of course there are many differences in the size and placement of logos but this is mainly to compare overall shape, stance, main features, etc. Overall the HPI appears closer to the original. I could only find these small reference photos of the real car:

Image Image

Click on images for full-size versions.

Image
1 - mirror shape is different
2 - wiper placement is very different between the two models. It looks like you can just barely make out the wiper arm in the first photo of the real car with placement matching the HPI model.
3 - overall shape of the Ebbro is much curvier than the HPI making the wheel arches seem much wider
4 - Ebbro center air intake is smaller and missing the smaller one above the lower intake
5 - Ebbro outer air intakes are rounded

Image
1 - windshield surrond is part of the window on the Ebbro model with the Calsonic NISMO banner covering it at the top. On the downside, the fit of this piece is rather fiddly on the HPI model.
2 - trailing strakes on the hood vents are much longer on the HPI model
3 - the point on the 'lightning bolt' is much sharper on the HPI model
4 - tow ring looks oversized on the Ebbro model

Image
1 - ride hight of the Ebbro is much higher
2 - at first glance the size of the wheels look better to my eye on the Ebbro but they seem too large compared to the real car. The relationship between the bottom of the side of the car to the wheel looks more accurate on the HPI model. The HPI model aligns more with the edge of the wheel while the Ebbro model aligns with midway between the center and edge of the wheel.
3 - the 'lightning bolt' is much crisper on the HPI model. On the Ebbro model it looks like you can see blue under the white around the edges.

Image
1 - side exit exhaust on Ebbro model is not present on the HPI model. It's hard to tell if they are present on the real car or not.
2 - side window surrounds are a separate piece on the HPI model
3 - green in Unisia Jecs logo on Ebbro model vs blue on HPI model
4 - rear spolier is thinner on the Ebbro. It's hard to tell which is more accurate from photos of the real car.

Image
1 - rear window surround is a separate piece on the HPI. Same fiddly fit issues as the front window.
2 - rear wing is more angular on the HPI model. Again, hard to tell which is more accurate based on photos of the real car.
3 - larger tow ring on Ebbro model

Image
1 - overall shape of the Ebbro is much curvier than the HPI making the wheel arches seem much wider
2 - no detail on fuel filler tops on the Ebbro model
3 - photoetch latches have more detail on the HPI model
4 - tail light lenses seem to be oversized on the Ebbro model
5 - Ebbro model has what appears to be an oil cooler which is not present on the HPI model
6 - cut out on rear bumper do not go all the way through on the Ebbro model

Very impressive analysis. I'd be more than satisfied with either...

In some aspects I prefer the Ebbro - especially since it has no issues with the trim lifting from the window glazing - and it passes the 3 foot test with flying colors IMO.

I hate it when you buy something that's supposed to be an improvement but it ends up being a mixed bag. Now you're stuck with a difficult choice.

The look of the HPI is more to my liking especially the front end. The headlight shape is much better and makes a huge difference. The Ebbro is not crap or anything and I wouldn't be worried if it was in my collection.

I'm wondering why you bought two models of the same car ? I lean towards the HPI.

Is this the same car ? The rear wing looks a little different to the Ebbro and HPI models :

I bought the Ebbro early in 2015 cheap from Boost Gear in Japan. Then a year later I saw the HPI for cheap on eBay.

Astute observation on the rear wing. The car in the picture your posted is from round 4 at Fuji. The rear wings (and other things) are different as seen in photos from HPI's site:

Didn't Ebbro and HPI work together on these models? I always though they were just from different races.

This was not one of the joint HPI x Ebbro efforts. Those would be:

8825
8827
8829
8831
44766
44767
44768
44769
