300 SL × 300 SL

Post by LUW » Sun Apr 30, 2017 1:37 pm

In your opinion, which one is the best model, a 300 SL from Ixo or the same car from Max Models? And BTW, what's the relation between Max and Minichamps?

Max = very early Minichamps, they made only a few models under this name. As for the comparison, I'll leave that to others.

And what's the difference of PMA between Minichamps?

Nothing.....they are the same. PMA stands for Pauls Model Art, named after Minichamps founder Paul Lang.

As for the 300SL, you can add Spark to the list of people who made the 1952 LM winner. To be honest its such a simple design there isn't a lot to choose between them, so price will be a determining factor. However, the Spark does have a few interesting features and sits a little lower than the other two which may be more accurate. Here's my Spark which replaced my older Max Models versions......I skipped the upgrade to the IXO along the way.

But in terms of detail, what would be best, Ixo or Max? For the #21 I was planning on going with Spark, but for the other two I don't think I need to invest Spark-money.

Personally I prefer not to display the same cars from different model makers side by side if I can as it tends to exaggerate differences in detail and proportion. Then again I'll admit to being a little "OCD" when it comes to my models :).

As to the Max vs IXO question, the Max models were made circa 1990 and the IXO's circa 2010. I think you'll find the IXO's superior simply because they are much newer.

I have a very poor picture of my Max. Its an old one but its good enough for me. Garys fingerprints are all over this one.

Gary told me you have a Max, but I couldn't find any pics of it.

My idea is to have one 300 SL on the bed of the MB renntransporter, and a second one in the LM display. I'll probably buy the winning #21 from Spark, but the one for the transporter can be the not-so-good model, either the 2nd place #20 or even the DNF #19. Right now I have a line to a #20 from Ixo and a #19 from Max, but I'm only buying one of them. So it looks like it will be the #20.
Thanks!

Wow, that's not bad. At all! So if the Ixo is even a little bit better, it will be a good buy. Image

Should be a great buy considering the IXO's can be found for under $20 on eBay.

Obviously the Spark version is the best, but if you're looking for another one more cheap, I would go for Bang models. This Italian maker did the 300 SL in some good versions, including the Le Mans and Panamericana winners. I still keep in my collection two Panamericana racers (the winner and the spider ones), but for the Le Mans winner I did replace my Bang for the Spark.

Just look, for example:

I did think about Bang, but since both an Ixo and a Max showed up, they got the spot light.

I'm not sure about Ixo, but I did get the Max Models a long ago, and compared with the Bang, this one seems very much better to me

For a model that will be displayed on the bed of a truck, that Ixo looks mighty good Image.
Besides, the Max that I found was of the DNF car, and no Bangs.

Which truck Luc ? If your thinking of the "Blue Wonder", you might want to keep in mind it was only assembled in 1954, so two years after Mercedes first Le Mans win with the 300 SL in 1952. You'd be better off with a 300 SLR (from Minichamps) :

You should get the Bkue Wonder Luc. It's a great piece of racing history. You just need a different car to go with it.

Don't worry, of course I will ;)! I had it in 1:18 and it was one of the tough ones to sell. I just need to get a different car for it, probably a 300 SLR from LM or maybe even the Mille Miglia #722 (though I would like to avoid that one because I have it in 1:18).
