Steve McQueen Le Mans diorama

Post by CDM » Thu Mar 15, 2018 9:04 am

Just spotted this interesting diorama of the Steve McQueen film Le Mans and a crashing Porsche 917

Surf past the Opel Ascona & Nurburgring features and its next.

It would have looked even better with a driver figure in each car.

Auto Modelisme is a fantastic French model magazine. It beats any model magazine available in the UK by miles. Lots of quality colour photos and reports on race & road cars. Text is all in Fench

Their Facebook page has some very good old film clips

Neat! though I'm not sure I like the flying effect, the artist's work is remarkable.

You know why Italians speak with their hands? Because they have to work a lot on their engines.

Interesting diorama, but completely incorrect.

- The car the 917 was overtaking when it crashed was a 911 not another 917.
- The movie was based on the 1970 race, so why include the 1971 winner ?
- The Porsche 917 never became airborne when it crashed and didn't lose its wheels

Clearly there is a lot of work gone into this, which would clearly require some background research of photos etc..

Surely proper research would have noted all the above comments?

Not to take anything away from the guys modelling skills, but there is one other glaring error......The car that was crashed in the movie was not a Porsche 917, it was actually a Lola T70 dress up with fake bodywork to resemble a Porsche 917 (even at that time the Porsche was too valuable to wreck). Therefore, when it's displayed in the crash scene without the bodywork, technically what you should see is a Chevrolet V8, not a Porsche V12.

Fantastic piece of work Paul - and including some of "our" favourite T33s amongst the many treats.

The "Porsche 917" crash in the film is one the few continuity errors. The yellow lower bodywork and partial race number of the Lola T70 chassis is fairly visible. A lick of orange paint would have made all the difference.
Having read quite a lot about the making of the film it would appear that production overrun was reducing the available time to complete the filming so perhaps time did not allow them to correct the error.
Also worthy of note in the clip are the permanently spinning rear wheels. The relatively crude remote control system just kept the throttle applied throughout the crash.
Other than that, still one of the best motor racing films out there.
