Back to Porsches...

The third and last race of the Porsche 961.

One of my long sought-after cars. And now I have both 961´s from Le Mans :)
In 1987, the Porsche 961, in factory Rothmans livery, was changed aerodynamically with wider wheelarches and better cooling. And this 4-wheel-drive monstercar was doing pretty good in 10´th place overall, when Kees Nierop crashed it going into Indianapolis, missing a gear-change on its 199´th lap. The car was actually not that damaged, so Nierop drove on, but it caught fire and he unfortunately stopped the car between two marshal-posts, so it almost burned to the ground. The car had the same horsepower as the 962´s, so it could easily do around 330 km/h at the Mulsanne. And the carreer of the 961 came to a premature end in this race. Co-drivers where René Metge and Claude Haldi. Spark.

Thanks!

But no. The wheels are actually perfect. It started the race out on these rims, but switched later on in the race for black ones...

Bingo!!!!
Well spotted :)
Very annoying actually, but didn't see it before I unpacked it. Bought it on eBay and hoping to find a decal one day to make it perfect.
Anyone in here who knows how to make decals and has the equipment to do so?

there are a few 'Porsche' Decals on ebay but you'd need to perfectly match the size, difficult to tell by just looking at a decal sheet, the logo in front I can't even tell what it is Hella? maybe.

Love the Porsche, the livery suits the shape very well and it looks agressive.

I want it to be perfect, so will not buy some homemade ones from ebay. I´m at Work now and then straight off to Le Mans after Work, so can not check up on the decal right in front of Porsche, but pretty sure its not Hella.

E-mail Spark about it and they might send the decal to you. I found them helpful with my Audi Le Man car and they sent me a new floor and a new set of wheels all for free. I took pictures and sent them in the e-mail to show the faults.

Sparks' Porsche 961 is fantastic....a worthy addition to you collection.

By coincidence I came across this picture today. While the car started the race on the gold BBS rims, it seems it ran most of the race on the black 5 spoke wheels which I think look better - I would like to have seen Spark produce it like this (or have supplied both sets of wheels so you could make your own choice).

Thanks. Yes, I have had this car in my hand many times at Le Mans, but something else always popped up....and now its really hard to find. So happy that I finally got it :)
I like the BBS-rims a lot...as I like to have my cars the way they started out in the race (but also visually)

Thank you very much for your kind words. I also started out with next to nothing, but is slowly going bankrupt now, adding a lot of nice little cars once in awhile ;)
You will also get there one day, being broke and all. Its infectious...

Another colourful Porsche. Bought this car some months ago, but had too many things to do to post pics.

Been too long between my 935´s and as I´m a sucker for Kremer-Porsches, here is another. I like the livery a lot :)

DNF at Le Mans 1978, but had a promising start and was as high as 12´th overall, when the engine gave out in the third hour. 10 Porsche 935´s was in the race and only 4 of them survived. This car was driven by Raymond, Franey and "Steve". Spark.

Detailing, as usual, is very high on these Spark Porsche 935´s...

Way back in history this time....and not at all colourful!

Porsche´s first purpose-built race car, the mid-engined 550 Coupe form Le Mans 1953. Already in their third Le Mans appearance, Porsche knew that they could and would make a difference with their approach. Ferry Porsche dictated a lightweight car that could fit a new 1500ccm engine. It only produced 98 bhp, but took the car to more than 200 km/h on the Mulsanne. Richard von Frankenberg and Paul Frère were both drivers and rookies this year. But that didn´t stop them from winning their class and to reach the chequered 15´th overall. The fantastic sympathetic Paul Frère went on to drive 8 Le Mans in all and hung up his helmet when he won the race overall in 1960 with Gendebien in a Ferrari 250TR. Between his debut and the win, he raced with some notable drivers (Carrol Shelby, Peter Collins, Edgar Barth and Maurice Trintignant) in some notable cars (Aston Martin, Jaguar, Porsche and Ferrari). The rest of his life, he was dedicated to Le Mans as either a journalist or reporter. von Frankenberg only raced Porsche 550´s on his 5 appearances. Spark.
