Ferrari 330 P4 Spyder

Post by guitardave_1 » Mon Nov 10, 2014 6:10 am

About time I actually posted something diecast-related! Incredibly, this was a Christmas gift  I suppose that makes it a 2013 addition  Haven't even started on pictures of the 2014 stuff...

This is the Ferrari 330 P4 in spyder form, as modelled by HotWheels in their Elite range. It represents the car of Chris Amon and Nino Vacarella from Le Mans 1967, where the title fight was between Ford and Ferrari. With the GT40 having achieved the aim of stealing Ferrari's crown in style in 1966, the new P4 version of the 330 was designed to fight back. At Daytona, the Ferraris took a 1-2-3 whitewash, with a lovely staged photo finish to drive home the point. Le Mans was a different story. Ford had a might entry across various teams, and although many didn't make the finish, the car of AJ Foyt and Dan Gurney ran (almost always in the lead) without incident to take the victory. Another 330 P4 (in coupe form) managed 2nd, 4 laps adrift. The car modelled here didn't fare so well. After 105 laps (compared to the winners' 388) Chris Amon suffered a puncture, and in his attempts to return to the pits a fire broke out which put an end to any hopes of continuing.

The model was never likely to live with the likes of Make-Up or Redline, but it does the job nicely for me. I haven't yet tried to really scrutinise the shape of the casting, but it doesn't look far off to my eyes. Paint is quite nice, and fit and finish is not bad. Photo etch vent and catches on the engine cover are nice touches, and it doesn't suffer from crude wiper, window surrounds etc. I get much the same feeling as I do with a reasonable IXO model - it delivers everything I need without spending big, and doesn't look out of place amongst more expensive counterparts.

I guess you've been busy this year, eh?

That's a really nice model of a racing icon- it would do for me too. In fact, it might just join the collection here.

Wow, can't believe it is a HotWheels model. It would stand the ground to my Make-Up version, specially when you consider the price difference!
The best looking racer ever!

That's not bad at all actually, considering that I have all 3 of the MAKE UP Daytona 330 P4s.

I have one of these and agree completely with your assessment, Dave. Its a wonderful value that betrays its low price.

Thanks for the positive response gents. Always nice to hear that others see the same merit in a model, and particularly so from the owners of the rather more premium versions. Seems like this does stand up as well as I hoped.

I don't know if HW make a coupe version - they would be a great pairing.

Thanks Tom. Fair to say that my concept of free time has been adjusted somewhat this year!
