Strasser Mercedes LP Transporter for BMW M1 Procars

Post by SpeedCat71 »

So I have been attempting to create this 1/43 Strasser Mercedes LP Transporter - the truck that transported the BMW M1 Procars of the BMW M1 Procar Championship, the single brand championship that took place in 1979 and 1980 and which included the participation of several F1 drivers of the time. I have dug out from the internet some photos but they do seem a bit hard to find - but here are a few and can you imagine how much the M1s on the trucks in the pictures would be worth now !
So as the base model I got hold of a rare Neo MB LP Tractor unit but had to cut out the sleeper compartment of it. Cutting, filling and sanding later, I was happy with the results - and it is resin so a bit easier to work with. The trailer will be from an IXO MAN transporter again which will need substantial modifications to it to look like an accurate version of the Strasser lorry trailers. It’ll need strengthening with metal rods in various places to take the weight of the model M1s I will put on it. These will be Minichamps cars of course in the BMW Motorsport liveries as per the pics. It’s going to be quite an expensive one this one but worth it in the end I hope.
I’m a bit stuck on what the actual tractor unit is ? Obviously it’s a MB but I think the version is the LP1619 - anybody out there know ? Also, what is the name of the colour blue ?
So this will be a bit of a slow burner that I can fit in when I can - don’t hold your breath for an update too soon!

Wow, what an interesting project.

Can't help much with the identity of the truck or the colour, but have you tried searching to see if the Strasser company is still around.

You may know this already, but I found this promotional model made for Strasser by Siku in 1:55:

Great project and some significant progress so far. To me it looks like most of the existing business end of the IXO will end up in the bin and you will be scratch building the ramps.

Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Hi yes I have seen the Siku one before. Don’t think I’ll be getting one though tbh. I had previously found some great text about the Strasser company and info on some of the treks these trucks did but I can’t bloody find it anywhere again - typically I didn’t save it

I came across an image of that transporter the other day and thought that would be a cool project. Glad you are taking it on. I will be anxious to see results!

Looking good! Count me in as another spectator of the development of this project.

Regarding the color, as far as I see it, the blue looks almost identical to the lighter blue on the BMWs, maybe you can identify that?

Thank guys. The lighter blue is the blue of Bavaria so I will check that. It doesn’t look far off does it ?

Little update. Had a bit of spare blue paint so splattered it on the cab to see how rough it looked lol. Also used the Neo wheels on the IXO chassis. Getting a little idea of what needs modifying here and there.
