Very Early White Metal kits

These are the very first White Metal kits I ever brought, from a small model shop in an alley way behind New Street Station Birmingham, I would think around the early 1970s.

Both are John Day kits one on the Auto Union and the other of a Le Mans Panhard. Both models made over 40 years ago, all made straight out of the box, I didn’t know what super detailing was back then!!

Quite random selection but probably dictated by what was on offer!!?? But they are both still in my collection.

These next two are both HRGs.

The streamlined car is the rare Aerodynamic HRG, and is actually a vacform bodied model. This is an all clear plastic body painted from the inside, like the old slot car bodies. No idea where I got this from or who made it Acorn Models possibly??

The other one is an HRG 1500 Mikansue kit. Built a couple of years ago as the 1948 Alpine Rally car of Richards and Beaumont. I have a later version nearly complete just need to sort out the rally plate. Again built straight out of the box. Chris

Those look quite good, the basic shapes are decent. Nice to see those old kits.

Tom

I think you are right. The basic shape and look of each one is actually not bad

Certainly the Panhard and Auto Union have been redone in modern times. But the HRGs have never been done

The Panhard was done in spyder form in 60's by Solido. I wonder if the John Day coupe was modified from the Solido - it would be interesting to see them side by side.

More old White metal Kits

All made by me many years ago, shapes don’t look too bad and the windows are good on all of them. Clearly I must have never brought the bad ones??

By far one of the best is this Mikansue Competition 1967 Cosworth 4WD

This Mikansue Competition 1965 Peugeot 404 Diesel also stands out well against a recent Partwork model

Another Mikansue Competition model the very first 1959 Marcos the original ‘Wooden Wonder’. Now who apart from Mikansue have ever made a model of this one?

Finally a not so good Austin Healey 300 rally car. The tyres are very hard solid plastic. Actually looking at it now it’s perhaps the wheels that don’t do justice to the rest of the model? In modern times a few have released this Healey and never really got the shape right. But I think that the Spark model is possibly the best one to get it right

The Cosworth and the Pug are real gems - nice one.
